Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a man that I think just about every writer should respect regardless of their field of writing. I just sent him an email personally and it got me thinking about why he is an author that I adore and respect so much. Some of it has to do with the sheer volume and variety of his work. He’s written books, comics (he claims that calling him a graphic novelist makes him “feel like a hooker who has just been told she’s a ‘lady of the night’.”), films, and theatre. I mean, this is a man who is listed in the Dictionary of Literary Biography as one of the top ten living post-modern writers, and is a prolific creator of works of prose, poetry, film, journalism, comics, song lyrics, and drama. What’s more, he does it all with grace, humour, and a sense of humility that many people are lacking. Not only are his books well-written but they are beautiful and full of symbolism and commentary on society without feeling weighted down or heavy. He is truly a master at whatever he turns his hand to. He is one of the few authors I have ever heard of that has a huge cult following and hits the best seller’s list EVERY time a novel is published. He is truly so completely talented its amazing there’s literary talent out there for the rest of us. There are many talented authors out there, both published and unpublished but he is a truly remarkable man.
