I have a To Do List a mile long (which is next to absolutely no surprise if you know me) and have more books than I really know what to do with. I read incessantly and my collection of books is proof of this (really, I just need to buy a library and retrofit it to make a home of the place). I’ve got books under my bed, above my closet, on 5 bookshelves, in a drawer, stacked on my nightstand, and 15 boxes of them in storage. I love books. Reading
So, I did the small group test reading the other day with the prologue of the trilogy-now-a-series. I was told something that surprised me. Namely, “Your writing is both beautiful and has wisdom to it.” I wasn’t expecting someone to say that but I always think that nonfiction is like a bullet and fiction is like a cannonball fired from an offshore ship. Nonfiction makes it’s point but really only makes it’s point. Fiction makes it’s point, but because it’s open to interpretation it can make points that you didn’t expect and can change a person’s perspective on things. So, here’s the thing. I’m a writer. I’m also a teacher/actor/singer/dance. You would think that the last four would mean that I don’t get that heart pounding, stomach churning panic before I go up to read my work, right? You’d be wrong.
